What is a PDI?
A Personal Developer Instance (PDI) is a free, fully functional ServiceNow environment that ServiceNow provides to registered developers and learners. It's the same platform that enterprise customers run — not a limited demo or sandbox. You get full admin access to configure tables, write scripts, build workflows, and deploy changes just like a real ServiceNow developer.
Every serious ServiceNow learner needs a PDI. No amount of watching tutorials substitutes for hands-on work in the actual platform.
✅ Completely free: Your PDI costs nothing. ServiceNow provides it as part of their developer program. You only need a valid email address to register.
Step-by-Step Setup
Create a Developer Account
Go to developer.servicenow.com and click "Sign Up". Use a personal email address (not a work email that might have IT restrictions). Fill in your details — name, email, country, and optionally your company.
Verify Your Email
Check your inbox for a verification email from ServiceNow. Click the link to confirm your account. This step is required before you can request a PDI.
Request Your Instance
Log in to developer.servicenow.com and click "Start Building" or navigate to the "Manage Instance" section. Click "Request Instance". Choose the latest available release (currently "Xanadu" or "Yokohama" — pick the newest one).
Wait for Provisioning
Your instance will be ready within 1–5 minutes. ServiceNow will show a loading screen and then display your instance URL — something like dev12345.service-now.com. Write this down.
Navigate to your instance URL. Log in with the default credentials: username admin, and the password shown on your developer portal dashboard. Change this password on first login for security.
Set to Developer Mode
In the navigator, search for System Properties → System. Find "glide.ui.developer_mode" and set it to true. This unlocks additional developer tools in your instance. Alternatively, go to System Diagnostics → Session Debug for debugging utilities.
Keeping Your PDI Active
This is the most common mistake new users make. Your PDI will hibernate after 10 days of inactivity. If it hibernates, you need to wake it up from the developer portal — this takes a few minutes but your data is preserved.
If you don't log in or wake it for an extended period, it may be reclaimed and reset. Avoid this by logging in regularly during active study periods.
| Situation | What Happens | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No activity for 10 days | Instance hibernates | Wake up from developer portal |
| No activity for 30+ days | Risk of reset | Log in regularly to prevent |
| Instance reset | All data wiped | Rebuild from scratch or restore backup |
What to Do First on Your PDI
Once you're logged in and in developer mode, here's a suggested first-hour checklist:
- ✓ Explore the Application Navigator (left sidebar) — understand the menu structure
- ✓ Open the Incident table (navigate to Incident → All) and look at a few records
- ✓ Create a new Incident record manually
- ✓ Open System Definition → Tables and browse the table list
- ✓ Create a simple Business Rule (System Definition → Business Rules → New)
- ✓ Explore the Flow Designer (search "Flow Designer" in the navigator)
Recommended Browser
Google Chrome gives the best ServiceNow experience. Firefox works well too. Avoid Internet Explorer entirely — ServiceNow dropped support for it years ago. Safari works but can have occasional rendering quirks.
💡 Pro tip: Bookmark your instance URL in your browser. You'll be visiting it dozens of times per week during training. A direct bookmark saves time and reduces the chance of accidentally landing on the wrong version of your URL.
