The Two Core ServiceNow Certifications
ServiceNow has a comprehensive certification programme, but two credentials form the foundation of nearly every ServiceNow career: the Certified System Administrator (CSA) and the Certified Application Developer (CAD). Understanding the difference, and the right order to pursue them, can significantly impact your job search and career trajectory.
What is the CSA?
The Certified System Administrator validates your ability to configure, administer, and maintain a ServiceNow instance. It covers platform fundamentals: navigation, tables, forms, ITSM processes, user management, notifications, reporting, and basic scripting.
The CSA is the entry point to the entire ServiceNow certification ecosystem. All other certifications require the CSA as a prerequisite. There are no exceptions.

What is the CAD?
The Certified Application Developer validates your ability to build custom applications on the ServiceNow platform. It goes deeper into scripting, application design, custom tables, service portal development, integration patterns, and advanced platform features.
The CAD signals that you can do more than configure existing modules — you can create new functionality. This credential commands a noticeable salary premium and opens doors to senior developer and technical lead roles.

The Answer: CSA First, Always
There is no debate here. The CSA is mandatory before you can sit the CAD. Beyond the prerequisite rule, there's a practical reason: the CSA gives you the platform fluency that makes CAD topics learnable. Attempting CAD concepts without the foundational knowledge the CSA provides would be like trying to learn calculus without knowing algebra.
🎯 Recommended order: CSA first → work on platform for 6–12 months → CAD when you're actively writing custom applications → CIS specialisations (CIS-ITSM, CIS-HR, etc.) based on your domain focus.
Does Having Both Change Your Job Prospects?
Significantly. Here's the practical difference:
- CSA only: Qualifies for admin, junior developer, and functional consultant roles. Strong starting point.
- CSA + CAD: Opens senior developer, technical lead, and architect tracks. Noticeable salary premium (15–25% in most markets). Preferred for consulting firm technical roles.
Most of our NowxLabs graduates target the CSA first during or immediately after the bootcamp, then pursue the CAD 6–12 months into their first role once they have real development experience to reinforce the concepts.
Beyond CSA and CAD
Once you have the CSA, you can branch into Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) certifications for specific modules:
- CIS-ITSM — IT Service Management specialist
- CIS-HR — HR Service Delivery specialist
- CIS-SecOps — Security Operations specialist
- CIS-CSM — Customer Service Management specialist
- CIS-VR — Vulnerability Response specialist
These module-specific certifications are highly valued at consulting firms and can give you a clear specialisation advantage in the job market.
